Iron Pellet Production Process
Iron Pellet pelletizing is one of the initial stages in steel production, where iron ore is converted into smaller, denser pieces to be prepared for processes such as direct reduction (DRI) or blast furnaces. These processed pieces are known as “pellets.”
Stages of Iron Pellet Production:
1. Selection of Iron Ore
- Iron ore is used as the primary raw material for pellet production. It typically consists of iron oxides that need to be processed into a usable form for steelmaking.
2. Grinding and Crushing of Iron Ore
- The iron ore is first crushed in special mills to reduce the particle size to a level suitable for further processing. These particles must be small enough to be appropriate for the pelletizing process.
3. Mixing with Additives
- After crushing, the iron ore particles are mixed with additives such as clay, bentonite (which acts as a binder), water, and other materials to enhance the quality of the pellets.
4. Pelletizing
- In this stage, the mixture is shaped into small spherical pellets using pelletizing machines. These machines form the material into round pellets with specific sizes, usually ranging from 10 to 15 mm in diameter.
5. Pellet Sintering (Heat Treatment)
- Once the pellets are formed, they must be heated in specialized furnaces to strengthen their structure. This process increases their durability and makes them suitable for further steel production steps.
- The furnace temperature during this stage typically reaches around 1,200 to 1,300°C.
Advantages of Using Iron Pellet in Steel Production:
